Pine Hills vs Heatherwood Challenge Cup

Day 2 0f 2: Final 18 holes of the Pine Hills vs Challenge Cup Results, Back at Home our team rallied together. With a strong start in the front 9 scramble. It was followed with many tight matches going our way.  This was the kind of play it took to Capture the Cup! 2 day final score Pine Hill:48 points Heathewood:32 points.

Congratulations to Joe Fontana & John Guerriero, both players Clenched all 8 Points over the 2 day event.

Day one of 2: It was cold & windy with lots of leaves!!  Matches did not start off well for Pine Hills with the early teams not winning many points. The later teams starting to win more points and narrowed the lead to just 2 points by the end of the day.

Day one Final points are Heatherwood 17, Pine Hills 15.

With 48 points left to be earned Pine Hills players need to put up there best game to gain the title.

Starting at 9am Saturday the 19th the first group Tees off in the 9 hole 2 man Scramble for 2 points. The second nine is a nine hole SINGLES Match each worth 2 points.

On a personal note, I would like to thank Joe Fontana, Paul Gruber and Jimmi Conway for your friendship and leadership over the years. In the A Flight, Jeff DiMarco and Paul Gruber battled back and forth through 16 holes, with Jeff finally taking the win on the 17th hole.  In the B Flight Frank Nealon built up an early 3 hole lead after the 5th hole.  Mike fought back valiantly over the next 6 holes, but Frank held on to take the win by 2.  In the C Flight, Bob Morelli gets the win after Marv Lafferty had to withdraw for medical reasons. Marv certainly would have had his hands full with Bob shooting an excellent round of  Net 68 this week.

The Blue Team jumped out to an early lead and kept building upon it throughout the day as they defeated the Red Team 29 to 25 points. Four 3-Point Shutouts by the Blue Team and a bunch of 2-1/2 point victories contributed to the solid win for the Blues.

The Founders Cup flights were each led by great rounds from Bryan Clarke shooting a Net 66 in the A Flight, Eugene Cucinello with a Net 67 in the B Flight, and Bob Morelli posting a Net 68 in the C Flight.  Nice shooting!

In the Gross Division, solid rounds by Jeff DiMarco & Charlie Pierro propelled them to an 8 stroke record setting victory over Greg Rotundo & Jim Smith.  Jeff led the way with an impressive 3-under-par 34 on the front nine including an Eagle on the 8th hole.  Greg answered with a near Hole-Out Double Eagle from the 13th tee to leave him a 1-foot Eagle putt (Ya gotta love a kick-in Eagle), Stellar play by both Greg (shooting 73 for Net 70) and Jim (shooting a 77 for Net 64) moved them from third place into second, but it wasn't enough to take down the leaders.

In the Net Division Mark Lish and Dan Addiss hammed & egged their way to another solid round shooting Net 62 to keep the rest of the pack at bay and yield a record setting 118. While Candido Goncalves & Larry Pecora turned in a Net 60 to grab second place by a single stroke they couldn't overcome the difference to take the lead.

A Team may place in EITHER the GROSS or NET Categories, but not both.  The lowest 3 GROSS scores at the conclusion of next week will be placed in the GROSS category, and all others will compete for Low NET category.

Ties for position next week will be resolved as follows:  Ties for First Place in either the Low Gross or Low Net categories will result in a Sudden Death Playoff starting at the first hole.  All other ties for position will be resolved by looking at the last 18 holes, last 9 holes, last 6 holes, last 3 holes, and finally the last hole.  If still tied, prize money will be split.

Players who are not members of the Pine Hills Men's Club must bring their current GHIN card with them, or provide us with your GHIN number prior to Saturday June 11th, so that we may look up your handicap. Players without a current handicap cannot participate in the Low Net Tournament, but may participate in all other tournaments.

The Grimm-Balcuk team squeaked out a 1 point lead with 41 points thanks to an excellent round of Net 66 for Tom Grimm.

The First Round was played in a 2-Man Best Ball Stableford Format. In next Week's Final Round, both player's Stableford Points will be counted towards the totals.  With both players scores counting next week, the team that can minimize their -2's will have a big advantage.

The fifth green opened up for the first time giving us a preview of what is to come.  Although it still needs a few weeks to get up to Pine Hills standards, it will prove to be a lot of fun when it's fully grown.

Format: Teams compete over 2 consecutive weeks.  The first round on 6/4 is a Best-Ball Stableford Format where only the best of the team's points count on each hole.  During the second round on 6/11, both players points are included, so be sure to avoid those double bogeys.

The weather seemed to befuddle almost everybody today with only a handful of members shooting less than Net 80 (Ouch!), and only one player shooting better than net par.

Both flights were decided by a single stroke in one of the closest finishes in recent memory. Daponte & Illiano led the field to a Net 63 in the AB flight with Giuseppe shooting a very nice Net 69. The Founders Cup got off to a slow start today, with only two members, G. Illiano & J. Fontana shooting better than Net Par for the day. As always, ties for positions were resolved by looking at the best back nine holes.  In accordance with the Rules of the Founders Cup, new members are only eligible to receive 10 points for participation until they have an established handicap.

The Founders Cup is dedicated to remembering the men who founded The Pine Hills Men's Club back in 1988, and is designed to be a season-long tournament where points are awarded each week for consistently good play relative to your own handicap and others in your flight.

• Cash Prizes will be announced for the Top Four Places
• All members are entered automatically with no registration fee required, however new members without an established handicap will only receive 10 points for participation until their handicap is determined.
• Points will be awarded each and every week in 3 flights in Stroke Play (Low Net) Format (regardless of the format we are playing that week.)
• The tournament will run from April 2nd thru October 15th.
• Points are awarded for top 5 places in each flight each week (100, 60, 40, 30, 20)
• All non-winning participants each week will receive 10 points
• As in all other tournaments, players who are forced to take an X on a hole are disqualified for that week, and will be awarded only 10 points for participation.
• Ties for top 5 positions each week are decided in the normal fashion by best back 9 holes, then last 6, last 3, last 1 hole.  If still tied, points will be split.
• Weekly points are added up after play on October 15th, and the top four points leaders will play off on October 22nd, 2011. (Rain Date is Oct 29th, 2011)
• In the unlikely event of a tie for the final four positions, the higher position will be awarded to the better points from October 15th.  If still tied, we will look back to previous weeks (Oct 8th, etc) until the tie is resolved.
• Accumulated points are then discarded, and the final four players will playoff head-to-head in Stroke Play (Low Net) for the four prizes.
• In the event of a tie for positions in the Final Four Playoff, Sudden Death Elimination will commence immediately on the 1st hole, with the better net score receiving the higher position. Sudden Death will continue until all ties for positions have been resolved.
• Players in the Final Four Playoff are ineligible to win in the normal tournament being played on the day of the playoff.

The Red Team took control early and stretched their lead throughout the day, until the final foursome with Fontana and Towle turned the tables on the Reds, squeaking out a one-point victory for the Blue Team. With a final score of 21-1/2 points for the Blue Team to 20-1/2 for the Red Team, the Blues get the nod with one of the closest matches in recent memory.

As a Thank You to the Men's Club Jimmi held a free raffle of $500 towards a new set of clubs and fitting which was won by Mark Rothenberg.
